The Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering (BSISE) program at Florida International University (FIU) is a well-balanced modern engineering program. While retaining all of the fundamental and traditional preparation for a degree in industrial and systems engineering, the program continues to evolve as new industrial technologies develop. Five factors make the Department and the BSISE program stand out:

1. Experienced and Committed Faculty

Leadership, experience, and concern characterize the Department’s outstanding faculty members. Their wide-ranging backgrounds and various specializations have led to the creation of research programs that strengthen the undergraduate curriculum. These programs foster individual and team endeavors, producing an environment conducive to creativity, dialogue, and mentorship.

2. Qualified and Motivated Students

Diverse, motivated, and highly qualified students are attracted to the ISE Program. More than 40% are women, and more than 60% are minority. They arrive eager to pursue studies that will lead to bright futures as professional engineers. Those futures are sometimes launched through participation in regional and national competitions where students win prizes and recognition for their presentations and designs. After graduation, ISE’s new generation of engineers find employment all over the world, attesting to their successful preparation and disseminating the reputation of the Program, or they pursue post-graduate degrees.

The strength of FIU’s engineering programs has also attracted attention from international institutions, resulting in educational partnerships with several Latin American and Caribbean universities. From these partnerships, the Department and College hope to extend the educational opportunities to future students into new and exciting direction, spanning two continents.

3. Hands-on Learning

Another asset of the ISE Department is its laboratories, fostered by a strong coalition of industry, academia, and other dedicated associates. These thriving laboratories are not only state-of-the-art research facilities, they also furnish valuable hands-on learning experiences to students, particularly undergraduates who are excited when their learning environment extends outside the bounds of the classroom.

4. Industrial Experience

The quality of the skills and knowledge acquired during laboratory research participation helps students in the ISE Program to effect a smooth transition into a variety of industrial placements in South Florida and elsewhere. By the time students complete the BSISE program, they have worked in at least three industry projects.

5. Global Cultural Exposure

Students enjoy particular extracurricular advantages while at FIU by virtue of its locale. Taking advantage of Miami’s exciting position as a gateway to two continents, the Department enthusiastically encourages formal and informal exchanges among its students through offerings that range from membership in professional and special interest student societies and organizations to participating in festive activities and cultural celebrations. In preparing engineers for lives in a global society, the Department emphasizes and upholds the fundamental tenets of industrial and systems engineering, whose applications are universal.

The strength of FIU’s engineering programs has also attracted attention from international institutions, resulting in educational partnerships with several Latin American and Caribbean universities.
